Maylan International Academy is an educational organization dedicated to providing an outstanding learning environment by combining the dual benefits of Montessori and Chinese immersion teaching methods.

Established by a group of experienced Chinese language educators in Georgia, Maylan’s founders have 10+ years experience providing Chinese bilingual education in the US and have created a uniquely engaging, theme-based curriculum that is both appealing and accessible to learners of all skill levels and abilities.

The pillars of our curriculum are inquiry and story-centered learning, research-based educational strategies that elicit the full potential of each student’s natural curiosity, creativity, and innate abilities. Our approach aligns with the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning, Communication, Culture, Connection, Comparison, and Community (the 5 Cs).

Here at Maylan, we are committed to cultivating a community of lifelong learners with a global perspective through our rigorous, engaging, and child-centered curriculum.

Exceptional Staff!

Maylan’s Childhood Education Professionals are native Mandarin Chinese speakers with bachelors or advanced degrees in education, the arts, or the sciences.

Our teachers give individual and small group lessons amidst the working and social atmosphere of our classrooms. Keen observers of the individual interests and needs of each child, our educators watch our students’ progress and keep records of their work, recognizing their periods of readiness, encouraging their whole development, teaching the proper use of materials, and inspiring love, order, and respect for what they and others are accomplishing. It is the unique blending of all of the above in the classroom that allows the students at Maylan to develop self-control and learn by choice while gaining independence and self-confidence as their skills increase.

Why Montessori?

Developed by Italy’s first female doctor, the Montessori Method is a child-centered system of education built on children’s natural love of learning. The educational techniques advocated by Dr. Maria Montessori nurture this love into a life-long passion and guides students as they grow into healthy, well-rounded adults.

Montessori offers a sensible, structured system that allows children to develop at their own pace, discovering and learning to use their innate abilities under the guidance of a trained Montessori teacher using specially-designed Montessori materials.*

The Montessori classroom is a child’s world, geared to the skills, pace, and interests of each individual child. It is designed to put children at ease by giving them choices in an environment prepared with attractive materials within easy reach.

Here at Maylan, our curriculum is specially designed to combine the Montessori Method with our research-based Chinese Immersion program. Through the use of engaging activities, stories, and multi-media learning, our one-of-a-kind Montessori environment helps young children learn Chinese as they play!

Montessori materials can be divided into four main categories:

“Practical Life” materials teach children to care for themselves and their environment while promoting concentration, independence, and coordination.

“Sensorial” materials develop and refine the senses to help children distinguish, categorize, understand, and appreciate what they perceive.

“Academic” materials guide children as they develop language, writing and reading, math, geography, and science.

“Cultural and Artistic” materials encourage the development of self-expression and the communication of ideas.

While playing with any of these materials, your child is developing inner knowledge and absorbing concrete concepts to use throughout their life as they encounter future abstract learning situations.

The Benefits of Being Bilingual

Speaking more than one language is becoming increasingly common in the US. Being bilingual not only gives adults a competitive advantage in the working world, but research has shown that learning multiple languages increases children’s aptitude for learning and awareness of themselves as global citizens.

Results from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) show that students who had studied a foreign language for 4 or more years outscored other students on the verbal and math portions of the test. Scientific research has found that being bilingual can have a profound effect on human brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age. Some studies also have found that learning another language can enhance knowledge of English structure and vocabulary.

Why Should my Child Study Mandarin Chinese?

Along with English and Spanish, Mandarin Chinese is the most widely-spoken language in the world, and with rapidly increasing trade, manufacturing and cultural links, China is a country of exponentially increasing global importance. Learn to speak Mandarin and you can communicate with millions of people around the world.

Why Study Chinese

Why Start Now?

Learning a language at any age is beneficial. However, according to Center for Applied Linguistics, the human brain is more open to linguistic development during the years between birth and pre-adolescence. Children who learn a language before the onset of adolescence are more likely to develop native-like pronunciation. When children have an early start and continue their language studies through high school and college, they are able to achieve levels of fluency that would otherwise be impossible with the late start of most language programs in schools.

Why an Immersion Program?

According to the Center for Applied Linguistics, immersion programs are the fastest growing and most effective method for language learning available in U.S. schools. Dual immersion instruction is based on the philosophy that students learn language best through use as opposed to more traditional, explicit instruction. Students at Maylan learn in a fully immersive environment where they are guided in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the language of instruction, be it Chinese or English.

Is Chinese Difficult to Learn?

In many ways, Mandarin Chinese is much easier to learn than European languages due to its relatively uncomplicated grammar. Unlike French, German or English, Chinese has no verb conjugation (no need to memorize verb tenses!) and no noun declension (gender and number distinctions). For example, while someone learning English has to learn different verb forms like “see/saw/seen,” all you need to remember in Chinese is just one word: “kan.” While in English you have to distinguish between “cat” and “cats,” in Chinese there is only one form: mao.

Each year more and more students around the world are studying Mandarin as a second language with enthusiasm and success. If they can learn it, so can you!
